Newsletter 27th January 2017

Dear Parents,

Open Afternoon

Don’t forget we are having an open afternoon on Thursday 9th February during which you are welcome to drop into the school any time after 2.00pm to see what goes on.  There will then be an open meeting at 3.30pm which all the teaching staff will attend when you are welcome to ask questions about anything to do with school.  If there are issues you want covered which might need preparation (eg demonstration of phonic activities), please let the office know in advance.

Soup Lunch and Talent Show

It is the annual soup and jacket potato lunch followed by the talent show, on Friday 10th February. All are warmly invited to the village hall for delicious homemade soups, filled jacket potatoes and cakes to raise money for the Sparkle Fund. Children will be served from 12 noon and parents and friends will be served from 12.45pm.  A paper order form will be sent out today – please return this by Friday 3rd February. We would be very grateful for offers of help to make soups, chilli con carne and cakes and to set up and serve on the day. If you are able to help, please email [email protected] or speak to Niki Richardson or Sophie Miller.  Quality control for the talent show is well underway and it looks set to be a fine event. Exact timings will be determined once we know which children are taking part, but we expect to begin performing around 12.45pm.  The acts will take place broadly in increasing age order, but group items will be interspersed as appropriate.

World Book Day

This annual event is fast approaching and will take place on Thursday 2nd March and we are inviting the children to dress as a book character.  There will be a prize for each class for the most imaginative costume.  There will also be book themed events on the day.

Health and Safety

The school had its annual Health and Safety inspection on Wednesday and I am pleased to say that it went very well. Over 100 separate issues were checked, and there were minor improvements suggested for only three.  I would like to thank Katie Rayner in the office for her hard work over the years in this area and to remind us all to thank Jean and Raffy for keeping the school clean and safe for the children.

This week we congratulated:

  • Art: Lily T, for fantastic listening, and sticking and cutting skills;
  • Sport: Noah M, for always being ready for action and being ready to learn;
  • Willow: Zoe, for fantastic responses during the maths challenge.
  • Ash: Lilly, for working hard in science; Nishan, for extra hard concentration in phonics;
  • Oak: Flora, for fantastic written work on the religious beliefs of the Ancient Greeks; Harry, for superb effort with written work;
  • Beech: Gloria, for brilliant work with 2-d and 3-d shapes; George, for using imaginative language in flashback writing.

Our Christian value for the term is Truthfulness. Ask your child about how St Lucia remained true to what she believed in, and about how the prophet Elijah was mocked for speaking the truth.
